Hawaiian Punch Good Girl Moonshine (How I got my kids to stop drinking pop)

I should probably start this post by saying that my kids don't have pop (soda, Coke, whatever you want to call it) or sugary drinks a lot. I try to make them drink water throughout the day but they don't like it and I have to remind them constantly to get them to drink it. They get most of their sugary drinks from our frequent trips to Chick-Fil-A where they are allowed to choose from Sprite, Root Beer, Lemonade or Sweet Tea so even if it's only a few days a week that adds up to a lot of sugar. I have tried and tried to get them to drink water with fruit or with very small splashes of juice but it's still a struggle to get them to drink enough of something they don't really enjoy. That's where GGMS (Good Girl Moonshine) comes in. I made the regular version and the kids weren't fans so I found a recipe for Hawaiian Punch version and tinkered around with it until it was perfect and my kids now beg for it all day.

First, you will need Celestial Seasonings Raspberry Zingers Tea, Watkin's orange, raspberry and banana flavoring, ground ginger, apple cider vinegar(ACV) and some kind of natural sweetener (Stevia, THM Sweet Blend, Truvia, Swerve, etc.)

I have found the perfect combination of the ingredients and flavorings for us but if you don't like it try different combos until you find what you like. If you aren't used to apple cider vinegar I would start with 1 tbsp and work your way up until you get the right amount.

One tip for those of you who never seem to have enough measuring spoons. I buy the 100 ct. plastic spoons from Walmart and use one for my sweetener and one for my apple cider vinegar. They are almost exactly a Tbsp. and if I accidentally throw the bag of sweetener away with the spoon inside I don't mind losing one of these.

Trim Healthy Mama Hawaiian Punch GGMS Recipe

  • 4 Raspberry Zinger Celestial Seasoning tea bags
  • 2 tbsp THM Sweet Blend or sweetener of your choice
  • 2 tbsp (between 1-4 tbsp)apple cider vinegar ( I use Bragg's and suggest buying an organic brand that includes the mother)
  • 1/2 tsp. of ground ginger
  • 1 tsp Watkin's orange flavor extract
  • 1/2 tsp Watkin's banana flavor extract
  • 1/2 tsp Watkin's raspberry flavor extract
Put all 4 tea bags in a 2 quarts of cold water overnight or for a few hours. Remove tea bags, add the rest of the ingredients and stir. Pour over ice and sip all day.

We keep 2 or 3 jars steeping at our house all the time because everyone loves it. I mean what's not to love? It tastes like kool aid/hawaiian punch, no sugar, no carbs, no fat,  and ACV and ginger are great for you and your immune system. It doesn't get much better. Now the kids are planning to go the whole month of March without any sugary drinks at all. If they make it they get $15 and so far it hasn't even been hard for them. They love this stuff and I'm happy to lose the $45 if it means they are not drinking empty, sugary calories. What makes this even better is when you are in public and your kids start asking if they can have moonshine when they get home and you agree without a second thought. :)

    1. I buy the Watkin's flavor extracts at Walmart but I've also seen them at Target. As far as using Xylitol I'm sure you can use it but I'm not sure what would be a good amount or if it would have an after taste. I would just try it and taste as you add it to make sure it isn't to sweet.

    2. Is it ok if they say imitation? Can't find pure extracts....

    3. I think for the xylitol you would only use half what it calls for in the sweet blend, that is where I would start at least! Sweet blend being a super sweet so is double the sweet of sugar!

    4. Yes, the imitation is fine, her picture shows that at least 2 of the flavors are imitation!

    5. Good sharing with healthy recipe, yes, apple cider vinegar (ACV) helps to boost metabolism, blocks the body’s storage of dietary fat plus breaks down and dissolves existing body fat. Read more benefits about ACV at:

  3. What makes it so red? Is there red food dye in it? We try to avoid that so I'm wondering. Thanks.

    1. The coloring comes from the herbs and raspberries in the tea. No artificial coloring or dyes that I see in the ingredients.

  9. I have a question about the ginger. I notice your bag says "Ginger root powder" but I'm wondering if the ground ginger from the spice section would work, since I already have that. Any thoughts?

    1. Yes. The part of ginger we eat is the root.

  15. This probably sounds like a dumb question...but do you place each tea bag In its own 2 quart container, or do they all go into the same one?

  19. I think adding fresh ginger instead of powder would give the flavor a big boost...I will be making and drinking your tea.....I am hoping to lose some weight by skipping the sweet drinks....Thank you !!!

  20. I noticed you have ginger root powder in your picture above. I have organic ground ginger, it is kind of an orange color, not white like in your pic. Is the ground ginger okay to use? Also, can you substitute essential oil for any of the extracts? I like using Orange essential oil in some of my GGMS.... don't know if the taste would change too much by not using the extract and using EO in it's place. Looking forward to trying this, and I'm betting my kids will love it!

    1. The ground ginger should be fine and I've used essential oils but the flavor extracts really make it taste better.

  22. I absolutely cannot tolerate the banana or the taste of banana. Can you recommend a different extract? Or do you think I should just add more of the other ones?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Any other fruity flavor would work or just omitting the banana would work also.

  23. I was so excited to make this. Just made it exactly as your recipe describes. Mine is a pale brown. :-( It is very weak. I used exactly what you called for and let the tea seep overnight. Any ideas? I was so excited.

    1. I'm so sorry. I have never had that happen and have no idea what could have caused it. Your tea is raspberry zingers right? The zingers are the ones that steep in cold water, other brands need boiled water.

  24. Do you need to steep the tea over night or can you make it and drink it right away?

    1. I've never made it without steeping it overnight. I know the water stays clear for a while and the tea darkens the longer it steeps. It's something you can try it and see how it comes out.

  26. I LOVE this stuff! Every night I put in a fresh batch to steep overnight and then add the remaining ingredients in the morning. I take the jar with me to work and drink it all day. I was not a soda drinker but really love bottled sweet drinks. No more-this is my drink of choice. I never get tired of it and am now up to 3 Tablespoons of ACV with a goal of 4. This stuff is so good! Sheryl C.

  28. My husband doesn't like fruit flavored drinks but is trying to quite cokes. Is there a ggms recipe that "tastes" like coke?

  29. Can't wait to try this! Are you using 1 quart jars? Your recipe mentions 2 quarts, so I just want to get the combination right :-)

  30. Going to Walmart today. Question- why do you cold brew instead of hot brew? Studies have shown that leaving no -organic tea in for longer than 5-7 minutes releases a lot of the toxins from the pesticides, but I wasn't sure if there was a mjaor flavor difference or other reason for cold brew? Not being haughty, just wondering for how I do things for myself. Thanks!!
